Episode 63: Near Death Experiences

On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we focus on the phenomena of Near Death Experiences (NDEs). Roughly 5% of Americans who are officially brain dead and then brought back to life claim to have a Near Death Experience. The NDE follows a set of common experiences formalized by Doctor Raymond Moody. Moody’s model includes an out of body experience, a bright light, being surrounded by loved ones, and a big fat tunnel with a god figure at the end of it.

Are these people crazy or looking for attention? Are they simply suffering from an autoscopic hallucination or a surge of endorphins? Does it have something to do with the release of DMT from the pineal gland? Or are they actually seeing some deeper side of reality we can’t fathom? We try to answer these questions by looking at cases of Dr. Pim Van Lommel, Dr. Eben Alexander, Dr. Sam Parnia’s AWARE study, Bruce Greyson, and the unique case of Miss Pam Reynolds. If you think something is on the other side, or you just want to speak to the Cosmic Muffin when you die, then this episode is for you! Special thanks to listener Nyoka Reed for the topic!
